Strengthening the European Union's environment and climate efforts are top priority for the future of agriculture and population health (CAP post-2020). The restoration of lands and soils, and especially those contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants, and affected by other degradation problems is a pertinent problem on a global scale. Particular attention is paid to the lands and soils influenced by metallurgical activities, and to those with increased acidity, in which the content of soluble metals reaches high concentrations endangering environmental quality. The deterioration of the technological, agronomic and ecological qualities of lands and soils is a consequence from industrial activities and climate change, causing serious environmental problems. This reflects on the way of land use and ecosystem development. Land and soil management must include all activities and good practices that can ensure protection and improvement of land and soils’ ability to perform their functions and ensure ecosystem services. Decisions should be taken about how degraded lands and soils are used in a way that preserves their ability to ensure their functions, i.e. buffering, filtering, purifying capacity in relation to surface and drainage waters, natural cycle of chemical elements in the biosphere, protection of biodiversity, production of food and biomass, etc. |
